Cambodia's rice exports to China increase rapidly

Despite the impact of the epidemic and floods this year, Cambodia’s rice exports to China are still growing rapidly. In the first 10 months of this year, Cambodia exported more than 190,000 tons of rice to China, a year-on-year increase of 36%.

The report released by the Ministry of Agriculture of Cambodia on the 3rd disclosed the above information. The Ministry of Agriculture of Cambodia pointed out that from January to October this year, Cambodia’s rice exports totaled 536,000 tons, an increase of 17% from 457,000 tons in the same period last year.

According to reports, in order to implement the consensus reached by the leaders of China and Cambodia, relevant enterprises of both sides have worked together to promote Cambodia’s rice exports to China. After five years of continuous promotion, the effect is remarkable. In order to expand the sales of Cambodian rice and increase its popularity, relevant Chinese companies have used the advantages of sales teams and sales networks across the country to promote Cambodian rice in more than 50,000 outlets across the country.

The Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture reported that Cambodia exports rice to 60 countries and regions, and China is still the largest export market. In the first 10 months of this year, Cambodia exported 194,000 tons of rice to China, a year-on-year increase of 36.26%; exported 174,000 tons of rice to European countries, a year-on-year increase of 32.51%; exported 71,000 tons of rice to 6 ASEAN countries, a year-on-year increase of 13.4%.

It is known that in 2019, Cambodian rice exports were 620,000 tons, of which 222,000 tons were exported to China, an increase of 35% over 2018. In 2020, China will provide Cambodia with a quota of 400,000 tons of rice imports.

Some analysts said that under the background of the new crown pneumonia epidemic, the demand for food in Cambodian rice importing countries has increased. In addition, the decline in Cambodia’s import taxes on relevant countries and regions and the increase in import quotas are all reasons for the increase in Cambodian rice exports this year. In terms of the types of rice exports, Cambodia’s fragrant rice exports have continued to increase since 2016; white rice and steamed rice have been significantly reduced since 2018, but this year they have resumed growth under the new crown pneumonia epidemic; organic rice exports have also gradually increase.
