In 2022, the export value of China's lithium-ion battery industry will reach a new high

Batteries can be divided into chemical batteries, physical batteries and biological batteries according to the original energy that generates electrical energy.

At present, chemical batteries are the most widely used batteries and are closely related to human social and economic activities. They are also the main types of battery exports in my country. Among them, lithium-ion batteries belong to one of the sub-categories of secondary batteries in chemical batteries.

A lithium-ion battery is a rechargeable battery that mainly relies on the movement of lithium ions between the positive and negative electrodes to work. During the charging and discharging process, Li+ is intercalated and deintercalated back and forth between the two electrodes: when charging the battery, Li+ is deintercalated from the positive electrode, intercalated into the negative electrode through the electrolyte, and the negative electrode is in a lithium-rich state; the opposite is true during discharge. Generally, a battery containing a lithium element is used as an electrode. It is the representative of modern high-performance batteries.

According to statistics from the China Chemical and Physical Power Industry Association, since 2016, my country’s lithium-ion battery export volume and export value have continued to increase. In 2021, my country’s lithium-ion battery exports will be 3.428 billion, a year-on-year increase of 54.34%; lithium-ion battery exports will be 28.428 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 78.34%.

In recent years, with the continuous development of my country’s lithium-ion battery industry, the proportion of my country’s lithium-ion exports has continued to increase. According to export statistics, since 2016, my country’s lithium-ion battery exports have accounted for more than 50% of my country’s total battery exports. In 2020, the export value of my country’s main battery varieties was 21.726 billion US dollars, of which the export value of lithium-ion batteries accounted for 73.4% of the total export value, an increase of 3 percentage points over the same period of the previous year. The status of lithium-ion batteries in battery exports further improvement.

In 2021, with the further increase of my country’s lithium-ion battery export value, the proportion of national lithium-ion battery export value in total export value will further increase to 81.4%.

Asia Pacific and the United States are the main export destinations

From the point of view of battery export destination, currently. my country’s lithium-ion batteries are mainly exported to Asia Pacific and the United States. In terms of price, the price of products exported to the United States is significantly higher than that of the Asia-Pacific region, mainly because the demand for lithium-ion batteries in the United States is higher than that in the Asia-Pacific region.

In terms of export volume, at present, the number of lithium-ion batteries exported from my country to Asian countries and regions far exceeds that of other countries. In 2021, the number of lithium-ion batteries exported from China to Hong Kong, my country will be 675 million; 648 million pieces; 440 million pieces exported to India; 337 million pieces exported to the United States; 222 million pieces exported to South Korea. Of the top five regions, only the U.S. is not in Asia Pacific.

From the perspective of battery export value, at present, the region with the highest export value of lithium-ion batteries in China is the United States. In 2021, the value of lithium-ion batteries exported to the United States will be 4.975 billion US dollars, accounting for 17.50% of the total export value. Germany, South Korea, Vietnam and Hong Kong followed closely, accounting for 12.28%, 10.56%, 8.92% and 8.01% of exports respectively.
