Japan's steel exports in 2021 up 7% year-on-year

According to data from the Japan Iron and Steel Federation, Japan exported 2.814 million tons of steel in December 2021, an increase of 10.0% year-on-year, and the eighth consecutive month of year-on-year growth. Among them, the export volume of ordinary steel was 1.832 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 12.4%. In terms of export destinations, Japan exported 393,000 tons of steel to China in December 2021, the same year-on-year; 371,000 tons of steel to South Korea, an increase of 8.3% year-on-year; 404,000 tons to Thailand, a year-on-year decrease of 12.4%; to China Taiwan exported 176,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 8.8%; exports to the United States were 124,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 91.3%.

In the whole year of 2021, Japan exported a total of 34.401 million tons of steel, a year-on-year increase of 7.0%, of which 22.128 million tons of ordinary steel was exported, a year-on-year increase of 5.8%; the export of special steel was 7.676 million tons, a substantial increase of 31.6% year-on-year. In terms of countries, Japan will export 4.897 million tons of steel to South Korea in 2021, a year-on-year increase of 1.8%; exports to China will be 5.124 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 12.6%; exports to Thailand will be 5.929 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 55.4%; Exports were 1.178 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 32.5%.

In terms of imports, Japan imported 693,000 tons of steel in December 2021, a year-on-year increase of 19.3%. Among them, imported ordinary steel was 356,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 4.0%. In terms of the source of Japan’s ordinary steel imports in December, 231,000 tons came from South Korea, down 10.0% year-on-year; 60,000 tons came from Taiwan, China, up 16.3% year-on-year; 52,000 tons came from China, up 130.4% year-on-year, the sixth consecutive month Increase.

In the whole year of 2021, Japan imported 7.548 million tons of steel, a year-on-year increase of 9.2%, of which 4.191 million tons of ordinary steel were imported, a year-on-year increase of 5.2%; the imported special steel was 574,000 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 6.7%. In terms of countries, Japan will import 3.358 million tons of steel from South Korea in 2021, a year-on-year increase of 3.4%; imports from China will be 1.339 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 12.3%.
